As psychiatric care increasingly intersects with neurology, geriatrics, rehabilitation, diagnostic specialties, and primary care, psychiatrists must be prepared to lead in the care of patients with complex brain-mind conditions. The Brain Medicine concentration equips residents with the conceptual frameworks, clinical skills, and collaborative mindset needed for contemporary psychiatry practice.

Brain Medicine is an interdisciplinary educational and clinical focus within our psychiatry residency that emphasizes integrative, neuroscience-informed care for patients with complex brain–mind conditions. The initiative reflects the reality of modern psychiatric practice, where emotional, cognitive, and behavioral symptoms frequently overlap and require collaborative, systems-based approaches.

What We Mean by Brain Medicine

Brain Medicine moves beyond traditional diagnostic silos to help trainees develop:

• Strong clinical reasoning across psychiatry, neurology, medicine, rehabilitation, radiology, pathology, public health, and systems-based medicine
• Comfort managing diagnostic uncertainty and overlapping symptom domains
• Skills for interdisciplinary collaboration and consultation
• A neurobiologically grounded yet person-centered approach to care

Conditions commonly emphasized include functional neurologic disorder, neurocognitive disorders, brain injurie, movement disorders with psychiatric features, neurodevelopmental conditions, first episode psychosis, and other complex presentations that span specialties.

• Interdisciplinary case conferences with faculty from psychiatry, neurology, radiology, pathology, and related fields
